One of the most common reasons for women to take a sabbatical is to look after their young ones. Post Maternity leaves get extended for a few more months to almost 1-2 years. Many brave women dare to sacrifice their career & financial independence to give their best to their child i.e. ‘Time’. A mothers presence makes a lot of difference in the initial stages of a child’s growth. At such a tender age all they want is to see their mom’s around. If mothers are able to spend enough time with their young ones during the initial years of childhood then the development of the child will be more positive & secure.

I’m sure most mothers would vouch that no one can look after their kids better than them. But after a certain point they too wish to get back to work, especially the ambitious career women who always wanted to scale higher. However getting back to work may not be as easy as it may sound, especially for those who have to start all over again. Even though in today’s corporate world most companies have special programs or recruitment drives to attract women employees encouraging them to get back to work.

Here are a few tips that can help one get back their confidence & courage to face the challenges that they may come across.

Keep abreast, staying away from work & getting busy with nappy changing & feeding can get very tedious & you would tend to slip out of what is happening around. Keep yourself constantly in touch with the world outside especially in the field you work.

Stay in touch with old colleagues, gossip is not necessarily bad especially if it’s not leading to back-biting or speaking bad about someone. Office gossip often help you be on top of what is happening while you are away. Staying in touch with your old colleagues will go a long way as they are a source of useful information.

Shop for new clothes, you no longer have the baby bump & continuing to wear the same clothes you used to wear during your pregnancy can make you look awful. Do away with your maternity clothes unless you plan to have a second child. Buy clothes that fit you well & make you look smart & confident even if it means you have to buy a plus size just incase you have not lost those extra kilos!

Update your profile, ensure your C.V. and all the other social networking profiles are updated.

Opt for a less stressful Job, now that you are ready to work does not mean you can work 12 hours a day neglecting your child & family. Look for a job that will be less demanding especially for the initial years of your child birth. Children often fall sick during the first few months to a year & a hectic work life could take a toll on your health & happiness and also your family life.

Adjusting with new colleagues, this may not be so much of a problem for those returning back to the same office or job. But if you are looking for a new job then this can at times get tricky.  If you are not easily accepted in your peer group don’t let it bog you down. Try to acquaint yourself with someone who is likeminded or just like you a –mother. Give it time & prove yourself through your work. Rest will all fall in place sooner or later.

Be competent, last but the most important thing is to be competent. Just because you took a break does not mean you can get away by doing a shoddy job. Your skills, knowledge & experience will soon be recognized & you will no longer feel that you took a break from your career!

All the Best!!
